Birthdate: November 7, 1731

Benjamin Banneker was a “free” astronomer like his grandfather. He also was a surveyor, an almanac author, mathematician and farmer.

Fun Facts:

• He was born to a “free black man”
• He made a clock of wood that ran for 40 years at the age of 21.
• He was said to urge Thomas Jefferson to work towards abolishing  slavery.
• He never married
• He was self taught in astronomy

Studies show that an alarmingly increasing number of US military soldiers are involved in reported domestic violence claims and murders of spouses, girlfriends and family members. But are we really surprised. You throw a man into a violent environment for years at a time with no professional psychological help and expect them to operate in a normal environment at a healthy mental state? That is like expecting a man who has been imprisoned for 20 years to come out and be a “productive citizen” in society with no help. This is the American way disregard the side effects (unless it’s on the bottle of our favorite remedy THE DRUG (but that is another blog post within itself).
